Stacey couldn’t speak. She just stood there, tears running silently down her cheeks.
The baby let out a sharp cry, louder this time. Brenda jolted, noticing the infant’s lips beginning to turn pale.
She shook herself from her shock and quickly wrapped the baby in a nearby blanket, gently rocking it in her arms.
“It’s okay,” she whispered. “It’s okay.”
Grabbing her phone, she called their family doctor.
“Dr. Lawson, I need help,” she said urgently, rattling off the address.
As the baby’s breathing slowed, Brenda paced the room, fear gripping her chest. Stacey sat on the bed, face buried in her hands, completely silent.
