The doorbell rang.
Brenda rushed down with the child and opened the door to Dr. Lawson. He worked swiftly and silently, his calm demeanor offering some relief.
After the exam, he turned to Brenda. “The baby’s stable, but clearly distressed. This child needs regular care. We must find out more.”
“Whose baby is it?” the doctor asked, glancing toward Stacey.
Brenda swallowed hard. “I don’t know,” she admitted.
Dr. Lawson’s expression darkened. “We’ll need to notify child services immediately,” he said gently. “The baby’s safety must come first.”
Brenda looked at her daughter, now curled into a ball on the bed.
