Sitting on the edge of his bed, Peter gripped the flashlight tightly. Rationality told him not to jump to conclusions. But his instincts whispered otherwise. With a deep sigh, he set the flashlight aside. “I’ll talk to her in the morning,” he murmured, trying to quiet his mind.

By sunrise, Peter had made up his mind. One night was enough. He had done a good deed—but he couldn’t let this become something unsustainable. As he dressed, he rehearsed what to say. “Maybe I’ll offer to help find a shelter,” he thought, hoping it would come across as kind rather than dismissive.

The morning air was brisk, and Peter’s nerves were on edge. He stopped by a café on his way back from a short errand, picking up breakfast sandwiches and coffee. “At least they’ll have a decent meal before leaving,” he reasoned.

Entering the garage, he found Natalie already awake, her children still nestled in sleep. She gave him a soft, grateful smile. “Thank you,” she said. They sat in silence, the rustling of wrappers filling the space between them.

As they ate, Natalie opened up. “We’ve been on the street for weeks,” she said quietly. “I lost my job when my company downsized. Since then… it’s been impossible.” Her voice cracked, but she kept her composure.

Peter listened, torn. He pictured the cold nights, the fear she must’ve felt for her children. Sympathy welled up, but so did discomfort. Could he really leave them here all day while he went to work?

The kids slept peacefully, unaware of the conversation. November’s chill crept into the corners of the garage, making Peter’s decision more difficult. He couldn’t imagine sending them back out in this weather. “They’re just kids,” he thought, a knot forming in his chest.

By the time he reached his car, he had already changed his mind. “Just one more day,” he told himself, even as a sense of unease lingered.

At the office, Peter found it impossible to focus. During lunch, he mentioned the situation to a coworker. “You let them stay in your garage?” she asked, wide-eyed. A few praised his generosity. Others warned him to be cautious.
