Millionaire Lets Homeless Family Live In His Garage. His Heart Sinks The Next Day!
“No,” she said quickly, then paused. “I think the kids may have wandered inside when I was in the shower. I’m so sorry—I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Peter nodded slowly. Her answer made sense. Still, unease lingered in the back of his mind like an echo.
“Please keep them in the garage from now on,” he said gently but firmly. “I just… I need to know everything’s secure.”
That night, sleep came in fits. Around 2 a.m., Peter was jolted awake by another sound—a metallic creak, unmistakably from outside. He sat upright, adrenaline coursing through him.
“She’s opened the garage,” he muttered. He climbed out of bed and tiptoed to the window. Carefully, he pulled the curtain aside, trying not to make a sound.
There, under the faint light of the streetlamp, he saw Natalie. She was moving across the driveway with a bag slung over her shoulder. His chest tightened.
She approached his car and opened the door. Within moments, the engine started.
Peter stood frozen, breath caught in his throat, as he watched his vehicle back out slowly. The red tail lights faded into the distance.
“She’s… stealing my car,” he whispered, disbelief flooding his system.
Everything collapsed in an instant. The trust. The warmth. The hope. Peter’s hands trembled as he dropped the curtain and backed away from the window.
All he could think about were Natalie’s tears. The children’s smiles. The stories. “Was all of it a lie?” he asked aloud.
His mind reeled. The garage was empty. The car was gone. And so were they.
Peter’s heart felt like it had been hollowed out. How had he misjudged so badly? How had he not seen it coming?
Snapping into motion, Peter called the police. His voice shook as he explained what had happened. “She’s taken my vehicle. And she had two kids with her.”
The officer on the line assured him a report would be filed and the investigation would begin immediately.
