Peter leaned against the counter, his resolve wavering. He had planned to ask them to leave tonight. But Natalie’s quiet humility made that nearly impossible.

“I can help out,” she said over her shoulder. “I don’t want to be a burden.”

Peter wanted to say no. That this wasn’t sustainable. But watching her, weary and determined, chipped away at his hesitation.

Finally, he spoke. “Let’s take it one day at a time,” he said, trying to sound confident. Natalie’s eyes brimmed with gratitude. “Thank you, really,” she whispered.

That night, Peter lay awake again. He was almost asleep when soft shuffling broke the silence. A thud. Then stillness. His eyes opened wide, nerves crackling beneath his skin.

He debated getting up but stayed in bed, convincing himself it was nothing. Still, sleep didn’t come easily. Morning found him exhausted and restless.

As he stepped outside, his neighbor, Mrs. Henderson, called out. “Peter, may I have a word?”

Peter approached with a polite smile. “Good morning.”

She frowned. “I heard strange noises from your garage last night.” Peter hesitated. “I’ve let a family stay there for a couple of days. They needed shelter.”

Mrs. Henderson’s brow furrowed. “Be careful. I’ve heard of scams. A young woman gains your trust… then thieves come in when you’re gone.”

Peter nodded, thanking her politely, but her words clung to him like cobwebs. Could he be that naïve?

He shook his head. “I won’t make decisions based on gossip.” But as he drove to work, unease crept back in, whispering doubts.

At the office, Peter tried to concentrate, but Mrs. Henderson’s warning echoed relentlessly. He felt trapped between wanting to believe the best and fearing the worst. “I’ll talk to her tonight,” he resolved.

But as the day wore on, worry overtook everything. Each passing hour dragged, every sound in his mind magnified by suspicion.

By the time Peter pulled into his driveway that evening, his thoughts were spinning. The weight of suspicion, guilt, and confusion sat heavily on his shoulders. He stepped out of the car and glanced toward the garage, unsure of what he would find or how he would confront it.
