Mark hung up with a heavy sigh and glanced at Jane, who was nervously twisting her hands. “I’ve got a bad feeling about this,” he admitted. “It’s clear she’s been hiding things from us.” He paused, thinking it over before adding, “It all started with that homeless man she brought home. I knew that guy was trouble. Do you think he’s connected to this somehow?”
Jane nodded, worry etched deep in her eyes. “Oh Mark, I just hope she hasn’t gotten herself into trouble. What if this Dean is taking advantage of her?” They anxiously waited for Rebecca’s call, which finally came later that evening. When they heard what she had to say, their worst fears seemed confirmed.
“Mom, Dad, thanks for calling me back,” Rebecca began hesitantly. “I know my wedding invitation must have been a huge surprise.” Before she could continue, Jane quickly interrupted, “Rebecca, honey, who is this Dean? Are you sure marrying him is a good idea? We don’t know anything about him.”
Rebecca took a deep breath before speaking. “I know this is confusing, but please trust me. Dean is an incredible man, and I love him deeply. We met in unusual circumstances, but he makes me happier than I’ve ever been.”
Mark interrupted angrily, “Is this the homeless man you brought home? The one we all warned you about? I can’t believe you’d marry someone like that!”
Rebecca stayed calm. “Dad, I understand your worries, but Dean is so much more than you think. If you just met him, you’d see why I love him. I know it’s sudden, but I hope you both can find it in your hearts to support us.” Then she paused, preparing to share something that could change everything for them.
