Jane’s face remained cold and unconvinced. She shook her head and pressed her lips tight. “I still don’t trust any of this. A homeless man suddenly marrying my young, beautiful daughter? It feels highly suspicious.” She fixed Dean with a sharp gaze. “I’ll be watching you closely. And just so you know, you will never set foot in my house.”
Rebecca gently placed her hand on her mother’s arm, pleading, “Mom, please. I know your worries come from love. But you taught me to follow my heart, and my heart led me to Dean. All I ask is that you give him a fair chance before passing judgment.” Yet Jane only shook her head, unconvinced.
Despite Rebecca’s efforts, the evening remained tense. It was clear Jane’s doubts about Dean would not fade so easily. The next day brought no relief—Mark shot Dean looks filled with contempt, while Jane continued to make passive-aggressive remarks at every opportunity. Watching her parents act this way left Rebecca feeling miserable and helpless.
That night, Rebecca confronted her mother. “Mom, I wish you could open your heart and see the incredible man Dean is, despite his past struggles. Nothing you’ve said has been fair or kind.”
Jane scoffed, “Rebecca, be sensible! This man is taking advantage of you!”
Their argument stretched late into the night.
By morning, Rebecca reached her breaking point. The day was meant for wedding preparations and celebration, but her parents’ hostility was ruining everything. With a heavy heart, she asked them to leave. “Please go,” she pleaded. “I want my wedding to be a happy day, and right now, you’re making that impossible.”
